Review: To enjoy tournament poker for advanced player’s you should already be a poker player that knows what you are doing at the tables. I don’t believe that you need to know that much to read and appreciate this book. It’s an excellent guide into the poker tournament world. And the tips and strategies works both online and offline. If you do not know anything about poker you should turn to something else to read. This could be a good third or fourth book.
The focus is on players that want to turn from a cash-table player into a tournament player. Maybe this is one of the books that could help you to understand the basics of tournament play and thereby take you al the way to the final table in the world poker tour or World Series of poker. There are some great chapters that any serious tournament players should study. The most important tactic knowledge is the gap concept that really shows how important position is. If you read this and understand it, your long-term tournament result should improve. If you already are playing tournaments this could be something that you might have felt. Your feeling tells you that you can open up under curtain circumstances, but you might not have the structure for how and when. Well this book teaches you this among other things.
Tournament poker is not the best tournament book there is. But as always Sklansky have a lot to teach in tactics and strategy. The book even includes a system that he claims should be good enough to take you al the way to the top. And those chapters are both fun to read and interesting. It gave me a different perspective and if I ever up against some opponents that I cant master I might turn into the system and try to play it. Sklansky always use statistics and math to explain why his theories work. His strength is to do this in a simple way. Of course there is a chapter about expected value. The book also contains information about how chips change value and tournament specific topics like the most important thing is not to get broke.
We could recommend this book for anyone that are turning into the exciting world of tournament poker. It’s probably not the only book you are going to study, but it should probably be one of them. Especially sense the way Sklansky present his ideas are simple even if some of the theories and ideas are though and deep. This book will probably support your understanding of other books you choose to read.
